looking for an old story: Epitaph Hello,
I tried posting this query on the FurryLit mailing list, which doesn't get much traffic these days. I don't know how many of the old guard of writers are members of this group, but I figured I'd try and post this here as well. I'm looking for an old story I remembered that was posted to the FurryLit mailing list sometime in the late 1990s or early 2000s.
The story was titled something like "Epitaph" and was a Victorian-horror mood piece. It featured a widower falling asleep in the graveyard after placing flowers on his dead wife's grave. He awakes later in the night to see the ghosts rise from their graves and write new epitaphs in spectral words on their gravestones, exposing their hidden sins. The story ends when he finds his wife's grave and sees what she's doomed to write on it.
It was a wonderfully clever idea for a story and I loved the mood to it. I'd love to find it again, not only to read it, but I'm considering an idea of a horror-themed anthology, either in print or in audio-book form, to be produced for this year's FurFright. If anybody remembers this story and knows the original author, I'd like to get a hold of them.
Thank you for your time.
Also, if anyone has written a good horror story, I'd be interested in looking at it for consideration of inclusion into the anthology. I'm looking for good dramatic fiction, character drama and stories that show hauntings, ghosts and monsters in a sympathetic light, while still having a nice spooky mood. I would also be interested in some good comedy using horror elements, or dark comedy, to complement the drama. I will likely be posting later on with more information on the proposed anthology, as I get it fleshed out. It will be a paying market, not as high as professional rates, but the writers will get some compensation for their work. |

Watts Tower Tours Restricted: Who would imagine a tower... http://la.curbed.com/archives/2008/05/watts_tower_tou.php Who would imagine a tower constructed out of found materials, steel, wire, and seashells would be so delicate? The Watts Towers are restricting public tours starting Monday until Feb while the city repairs damage from the 2004-05 rain storms. Why such a long repair time? Apparently, it takes a lot of time and money ($569,000 in FEMA funds) to build scaffolding around a structure that can't be leaned on. Via flickr user danagraves. [LA Times] |

Skylands: Storm Warning Skylands: Storm Warning ©2008 by David J Rust Antonia, if she'd had a father, would have no doubt been warned against running off. Her father would have instilled the fear of God into her with regards to not straying from the flock. Despite her young age, she guessed that had her father remained in her life, she wouldn't be straying so far away from the other children to seek out her One True Friend. No, the truth was, she wouldn't be breaking the rules if her father had been a part of her life. Whether out of a desire to protect her daughter from the truth of their breakup, Antonia's mother hadn't raised her voice or overly chastised her daughter in the two years since Grant had left. Antonia only knew that she was spared the dimly-remembered sharp discipline from her mother and didn't attribute the lax controls on her life as having anything to do with Dad's departure. However, despite this freedom, she quickly became frustrated by her search's lack of success. ( Continue to read about Skylands )I originally posted a version of this story a few weeks ago. I've been adjusting it on my lunch breaks and finally polished it well enough that I think it's much clearer and better than it used to be. I put it here for your reading enjoyment. It is a very short fantasy piece (although not short enough to qualify as "Drabble") that was inspired by me thinking about the fantasy world I've been working on for the past few months: Skylands. This is a world of floating islands, skyships, and a myriad of races, all cobbled together from pieces of other worlds. The game will be starting soon, replacing the venerable "Vanguard" campaign, and this tale sprung to mind as I was working on races. Again, enjoy! Breaking: Santa Monica Ficus Trees Cut Down http://la.curbed.com/archives/2008/05/breaking_santa.php
At approximately 6 am today, the city of Santa Monica began cutting down 23 ficus trees around 2nd and 4th Streets. Goodbye, big strong trees. And no, it doesn't look like the Santa Monica Treesavers--who were against the tree carnage--had time to wake up and and chain themselves to the trees, as they had threatened to do. As previously noted, the city said the trees needed to come down because they were unhealthy and ripping up the sidewalk. A city official for Santa Monica confirms that as of 9:45 am, all the trees are gone. No word on when the planting of ginkgos--the replacement trees--will happen. UPDATE: The Treesavers blog has posted two black and white photos, seen above, on their site. They write: "This day--and the people responsible for all this--will be long remembered in this town." Whittier Boulevard Getting A Little European http://la.curbed.com/archives/2008/05/east_las_whitti.php A porn store sits next to a kid's furniture shop in an ill-planned pocket of East LA, but a much-needed make-over is coming to Whittier Boulevard, reports the Los Angeles Times, with condos, apartments, and "European-style, street-level shops and restaurants below homes planned" for this 16-mile stretch of Whittier Boulevard. Some of these changes are big, some small, but here is what's planned, according to the paper:
---$4.5 million to fix sidewalls, curbs, and add palm trees [Ed: Palm trees? Evil trees aren't banned?].
-- Plans to clean stores, fix signs, and other cosmetic tweaks along Whittier near the 605.
---A $12 million "beautification project" along Whittier and Montebello boulevards that'll offer 55 rental units (senior-housing) with 23,000 square feet of commercial space.
---A $40-million, 96-unit town house development at Whittier, between Virginia and 1st avenues.
---Nearby in Montebello, Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Glove development company is planning 80 Mediterranean-style condominiums. [Via Gilbert Estrada]

The weather effects me pretty badly emotionally, especially after such lovely weather.. this.. cold, wet and absolutely SHITE weather makes me exceptionally grumpy and lethargic. I sort've feel sorry for Rachel, she went on holiday to Hunstanton today with her parents and boyfriend... Hunstanton being a seaside place and all, yeah. Hopefully the weather will improve for her, I hope for myself too. << But yeah, I came home at 1 today. I forgot my iPod, so I had nothing to block out the blatantly teenage-esque conversaton behind me between 3 persons about 'who fancied who', and who told who and when and why they fancy each other. I guess you either grow out of kiss chase, or you don't. I got asked to work 8-6 tomorrow, and simply, I said no this time. I keep getting asked this. I lost my entire side of a shift swap the other weekend because of it, and to be honest, Sunday is my only entirely free day anymore, so I'd quite like something to look forward to on Friday night, and that's not going into work at 8, and getting back at 6. I bought myself some hair extensions last night to try out.. so this will be interesting. I ordered them in 'ash blonde', which I thought was the closest to my hair colour, but it's no biggie if they're a slight bit off. And I got them in 18"... haha, looooong hair. I did used to have longlonglong hair when I was young - say, to-my-arse long? If it looks any good whatsoever, I'll get pics. Current Mood: lethargic.Current Music: Flashing Lights - Kanye West |

Home on the Range Friday is errand day. Marg gets off early on Fridays and we have lunch out (Pho today!) and then run errands. Good thing I checked my supply of illustration board as I'm down to little bits. So today, I'm off to the art supply store to buy more to work on AC art. However, I woke up early today and was itchy to do some art while I waited for Marg. Oh ho, parchment! So here's a quickie I did up this morning. Lots of folks really liked the cowboy ponyboy I did as a recent commission, so I decieded to revisit him. Here's the results. This one there are prints available and the original will be at AC. 9x12 sepia markers on parchment paper. Current Mood: happy |

Update: im ok! Shortly after my post Chris took me to the ER, I had such a high temp. that I was starting to get delerious. After sitting in his car and cooling off under the AC for a few, we got to the hospital. My tempurature was 102.9 which was as I was starting to feel better. The doc confirmed it was cellulitis and put me on an IV drip of some really strong antibiotic (starts with a V?) I feel a lot better, but not 100%. I'm taking off of work today, im sure my boss will be thrilled  but oh well. I have a doctors note. ;) |

it occurs to me that i haven't posted anything since... uh... well, in a while. lots of comments, but no entries.
anyway... for the small cross section of people who read this, but don't already know: i'm moving back to ottawa around the middle of june (exact date tbd). my lease here in montreal is up july 1, but i'm trying to be moved out before then. why? well, for some reason, every lease in the city seems to go from july to july, so you can imagine how ridiculous things get.
so i'll be puttering around ottawa for the summer... and then back to school in the fall. humanities at carleton is the plan, so we'll see how that goes.
so... yeah. |

New to sewing in general. I just learned a few months ago how to hand sew a back stitch. Yes, you may all gasp. But I've set myself to the task of attempting to create realistic ears and a tail to mimic that of a large spotted genet set in golden to brown tones. So if anyone has any suggestions on pattern making as well as formation of the ears, the importance of foam, etc. I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm going to be wearing the tail and ears to Dragon*Con 2008 if I can get around to making them along with my latex muzzle and face/body paint. Current Mood: determined |

Barbershop exerpt Just want to share my "hobby" with you... This is one of the top quartets that has won gold at the International competition... Vocal Spectrum! Here's one of their many songs they do.... yes they are dressed up in tuxes... :P "I wanna be like you." This is an example of a non-barbershop song arranged in barbershop style. I hope you enjoy... I think it is important to keep the arts going and share each artform. You don't have to like everything of course, but willingness to take in new forms of art is always a good thing :) Barbershop has changed dramatically even in the last 20 years... as barbershop has been extensively studied over the years to understand what makes it so wonderful to listen to. Barbershop harmony IMO is the hardest art form for voice out there. This can be debated of course. Not only do you have to have 4 people (in a quartet) perfectly on pitch, but all vowels using the shape of the mouth have to be perfectly in synch, along with rhythm, dynamics, etc. And if this wasn't hard enough, barbershop singing is 100% acapella (without accompanyment). It weird, you can hear a lot of different 4 part (men's) harmonies songs, but i'm sure even the untrained listener can pick out a barbershop arrangement from a non-barbershop arrangment. Post any questions you have here, and as always, comments are always welcome too :) Current Mood: content |
